The award winning Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre is now in its sixteenth year and gets bigger and better everytime. With over 300 stalls situated all around the historic Georgian town centre it has the perfect mix of old and new.

Communicate UK were invited once again to support this ever growing and popular 4 day event with our CCTV Event Hire Packages.

The challenge this year was to ensure we support the local Police and Event Organisers with even more cameras than ever before for this huge magical Christmas experience and noted best Christmas Fayre in the UK.

The Brief

Communicate UK were asked to install High Definition CCTV cameras to monitor the whole Christmas Fayre including the children’s opening parade and fireworks, a cookery theatre and food area in the Cathedral grounds, the children’s activities area and fun fair on Angel Hill and in the Abbey Gardens and the main square where the stalls were set up.

The Challenge

A site survey identified that the area to be covered had increased significantly from 2017 which meant more CCTV engineers needed to be allocated to the job to ensure successful installation and testing of the CCTV monitoring system within the set timeframe.  The other significant factor is that Bury St Edmunds is an historic town made up of many Graded buildings which meant that the surveyor had a more difficult role of identifying CCTV fixing stations.

Timeframe

The team had one day to get every camera installed and tested for the operational event team to review with the local Police to ensure all areas of the event were covered correctly.

Installation

The CCTV Engineers installed 9 High Definition fully functioning dome cameras over wireless links covering the whole of the Christmas Fayre.  These are fairly easy to install however pre-site visit with the Bury St Edmunds Event Organiser team from the Council together with their Health and Safety representatives identified a number of key challenges.

Some of the plans and deployment of cameras entailed using boom lifts in the public domain during busy shopping periods.  The team had to make sure areas were barriered off each time to meet Health & Safety regulations.  The team also required PAL Cards to operate systems.

Two remote cameras to support the park and ride service working on a 3g connection were also deployed.  Testing of all cameras crucial to ensure the Control Room could view all locations.

De-rig

As with all event hires, the team have to go back, usually out of hours, to de-rig the system.  This event meant engineers working over the weekend to de-rig.

Success

The Christmas Fayre was by far the busiest they have ever seen with the number of visitors increasing significantly against 2017.  The event has been deemed an incredible success.  The CCTV installation was completed ahead of schedule and to the satisfaction of both the local council and the Health & Safety representatives.   No issues were identified during the 4 day fayre or with any of the CCTV Hire Equipment or monitoring station.

Communicate UK are extremely pleased with how the fayre went - another successful CCTV Event Hire.

CASE STUDY: V FESTIVAL

When you have 85,000 visitors and countless celebrities in one place their health & safety is paramount. The V-Festival in Chelmsford covers a vast area and CCTV is the only option to monitor such a large crowd over a wide area.

Management explained to our Communicate engineers that they needed to be able to monitor all access points at the perimeter of the venue, but also required the ability to monitor the crowd throughout the whole venue. Several offices across the site were used by security teams and the police, each requiring access to the live videos.

After a site survey the Communicate engineers recommended the installation of a hard wired CCTV camera solution at strategically placed sites across the venue. To achieve full coverage we recommended 12 fully operational dome cameras. These cameras are movable using a joy stick controller to enable viewing across a wider area. We also recommended 5 fixed cameras where movement wasn’t needed, and were fixed on a location.

Such was the complexity of the installation that we recommended a man on site throughout the whole event. In the event of an emergency or equipment failure our on-site engineer would be on hand to deal with the situation.
