It's a hot topic across social media, with daily posts on local facebook groups of home burglaries including cars being taken off the drive and bikes being stolen from the shed. Startling figures show crime rates have increased more in the Braintree area than anywhere else across Essex. Essex Police 2016/17 vs 2017/18 figuresshow there has been a rise in all crime offences by 24.4% in Braintree which is 5.7% more than Southend which was next on the list.
Generally, crime is on the increase across the whole of England and Wales (excluding fraud) increasing by 10% to almost five million in the year ending June 2018.
With offences in Essex increasing by 12% – with certain crime increasing significantly more than the national average. Robbery soared by 35% in Suffolk, according to Home Office crime data compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Moneysupermarket recently analysed 5 years of data using 1.8 million home insurance quotes and established IG4 postcode (covering an area between Redbridge and Gants Hill) suffered the worst rates of burglary in the UK. As part of this research, www.moneysupermarket.com launched their ' Burglary Hotspot ' tool on their website. You just enter your postcode and it gives you a percentage on how likely your area is to be burgled and rates it against the whole of the UK - very clever!
